

If you're trying to teach elementary kids how to recall the spellings of words, having them complete a crossword can be a fun way to practice. Most crossword that have been generated on our site so far have been for upper-elementary spelling words. Let's consider three examples of how a crossword can be used in ways that actually facilitates learning. If you have items that need to be memorized, such as spelling words or specific vocab terms, I think crosswords can be a beneficial tool for teachers. However, I don't think it's wrong to supplement a good lesson with an occasional puzzle or worksheet. Exploratory learning, hand-on lessons, cooperative learning, and lessons that encourage students to use higher order thinking skills are the way to go.
